A research registry for chronic subdural haematoma

What is a chronic subdural haematoma?

A chronic subdural is a collection of blood lying between the skull and brain, it can form after a minor head injury and causes symptoms by placing pressure on the brain.  We have more information for both patients and professionals available at chronicsubdural.info

So what is the nCSDH?

We want to understand how care for patients with a cSDH is organised across the country and how this might affect access to surgery and patient outcomes.  We know that a large number of patients with a cSDH require transfer to a specialist hospital for their surgery and it has previously been difficult to understand how this works and what happens when patients are returned to their local hospital.  We hope to answer these questions by collecting data from all hospitals that provide care for patients with a cSDH both before and after surgery.

How is the project being supported?

The project is being funded by research funding from the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR304395) and supported by major national partners including the British Geriatrics Society, Neuroanaesthesia and Critical Care Society, Royal College of Anaesthetists Centre for Research and Improvement, and the Society for British Neurological Surgeons.

How can I get involved?

If you're a medical professional working in a specialist or non-specialist hospital that looks after patients with a cSDH we'd love to hear from you.  Please fill in our expression of interest form (available here) to register your interest.  We hope to be reaching out to those who are interested in early 2026
